Welcome To The Shane Scott Outfitting Black Bear Hunting Information Page
This hunt entails using well trained bear hounds of various breeds to run the bear. We do this by "rigging" with strike dogs. Once the hounds scent the bear, they are released to track and tree the bear. Each dog is equipped with a radio collar to monitor their direction and activity. The dogs are followed by vehicle or foot, depending on the location. Once the bear is treed or bayed up we move into position for the hunter to take his shot.
A Bear hunt with hounds can sometimes become a physical fitness test. We recommend anyone interested in a hound hunt to be in excellent physical condition. There is nothing more frustrating for a hunter than to lack the stamina to make the entire run. For those wishing to pursue this hunt, you are in for a very exciting time.
Most of our Bear are color phase black bear, cinnamon, brown, and some blonde. They generally square 6 to 7 1/2 feet and score 18 to 21.
Utah has a Conservation Tag Program. Conservation tags are 100% tax deductible for the buyer. This conservation money is used on wildlife projects here in Utah. It is money well spent for wildlife and habitat. These tags allow us to hunt the premium areas without waiting to draw a tag. We can assist you in purchasing these tags and help you apply for the big game drawings.
The tags for these hunts and seasons can be drawn out in the Utah Online Application Black Bear Public Drawing or purchased at a Conservation Auction. The Utah Online Public Black Bear drawing is in February each year. The Utah Conservation Tags are tax deductible in most cases as a charitable donation. The Conservation Tag Auctions are held from January to June each year. Contact Shane Scott Outfitting for estimated Utah Conservation Tag Pricing.
All units have Spring, Fall some units have Premium Tags available.
The spring hunts give the hunter and increased chance at getting a boar.
Snow can make spring hunt access more difficult depending on the year.
During the fall season in September the black bears are very active storing fat to prepare for winter.
There are now Utah Spot and Stalk hunts as well as a few Harvest Objective Units and seasons.
